SEO – Optimize For the Right Keywords

It never ceases to amaze me, how difficult and complicated many people seem to make keyword research. While it’s true that it is one of the, if not the most important steps in sound search engine optimization practices, it is untrue that it is hard or complicated. It is actually quite simple if you understand exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish. The reason you do keyword research for SEO – optimize for the right words or phrases.

There are three basic things you want to learn from the research you do.

1) Number of daily searches. How many people are searching for this term every day? Obviously, you want this number to be as high as possible. How high depends on what it is you are trying to do. Be aware that the number of searches will differ if you search in broad, phrase or exact modes.

2) Competing websites. Just as important as how many people are searching the term is how many websites are currently ranking for that term. Obviously, you want this number to be as low as possible. The less the number of competing websites, the easier it will be to rank for that term. In addition to finding out how many competing websites there are, you also want to know how strong the top ten ranking sites for a specific word or phrase are.

3) Cost per click. If you are doing keyword term research for the specific purpose of running a pay per click advertising campaign, you want to learn how much money you will have to spend per click, for that specific term.
